Brentwood School (elem)

Brentwood School is a place "where every student is a success." This hilosophy guides staff members as they plan and develop programs to meet the needs of each student. We believe that all students can learn and deserve engaging, hands-on instruction. Academic success, high self-esteem and a positive, safe environment remain our top priorities.

It is critical that parents continue to provide stable, loving homes and motivate our children to come to school ready to learn. We must work together to foster the joy and value of learning in our children to ensure their success. High expectations combined with a child-centered educational philosophy and a positive learning environment, make Brentwood School an ideal place for students to

Brentwood, CA 94513-1610

For over thirty years Garin school has served the children of Brentwood academically, as well as developing them socially and emotionally. Our school serves 798 students in grades K-5 with a teaching staff of 40 teachers, four certificated support personnel, and 19 classified staff. Our student population is 47% white, 43% Hispanic, and 8% other ethnic groups. Approximately 25% of our students are learning English as a second language and 34% receive free or reduced lunch. The vision for our school is to provide students with meaningful, consistent curriculum with high expectations so that ALL children are literate and successful and to help our students learn to be respectful, responsible, and safe so that our students become humane, caring individuals capable of dealing with the complex issues the world presents. Garin School is proud to serve a student population that is both culturally and socio-economically diverse. Our students have access to a strong academic program based on attainment of the California standards. A well-trained teaching and support staff, comprised of both  xperienced and new teachers, implement the curriculum using many different teaching methods to meet the needs of the students.

The Garin English Language Advisory Committee is a group of parents and staff who meet to discuss and decide matters that affect our bilingual students and program. Garin has an active Parents Club that supports our school by providing school-wide family events such as the fall carnival and December holiday gift shop, as well as fundraisers to support our school financially. The money from these fundraisers goes directly to benefit our students through providing classroom materials, assemblies, or money for events. They also provide volunteers to help run fundraisers, health screenings, book fairs, and many other events. We maintain regular communication with parents through Friday H.O.M.E. (Handing Out Messages Effectively) Envelopes that contain many notes, newsletters, or important school/classroom communications. Parents then return the envelopes by Monday of the following week. We  ncourage parents to contact their child’s teacher as often as necessary or when questions arise. Parents can do so via e-mail at (first initial)(last name)@brentwood.k12.ca.us or by calling the school at 925/513-6370 and leaving a message. Calls are restricted to the classroom during instructional periods, so alls are referred to our voice mail system. Our goal is to provide a well-rounded education that emphasizes the Garin Guidelines of being Responsible, Respectful, and Safe. Throughout the year, students receive recognition for their positive behavior, good attendance, and academic growth in their classroom. Awards assemblies are held at the end of each trimester to recognize "Eager Readers," Wonderful Writers," "Marvelous Mathematicians," "Active Participants," and "Good Citizens" as well as those with perfect attendance. Throughout the  ear, teachers recognize 2-3 students with an invitation to have "Breakfast with the Principal." Each Monday morning, the Principal shares ‘Words of Wisdom" emphasizing a character trait and the importance of student responsibility for making good choices. Implemented in many rooms is a character education program, Second Step, which focuses on impulse control, empathy, and anger anagement. Other programs promoting a positive learning environment include Cougar Council, Science Fair, Student of the Week, assemblies, reading incentive programs, Young Authors Week, Great Kid tickets, Healthy Snack tickets, and Perfect Attendance Awards. During their career at Garin School, students have the opportunity to participate in musical performances, such as our annual winter fest, grade level musicals, recorder instruction, or band instrument instruction.A computer lab, staffed by an instructional aide, provides opportunities for students to learn computer skills and link them to classroom learning.

The Reading Academy provides extra reading instruction for identified students. Funded by Title I money, instructional aides provide students with additional small group instruction four days a week. After school programs are also offered throughout the year to give students additional opportunities for academic success. These activities include homework assistance, small group tutoring, and English Language Development. After school enrichment classes provide unique experiences for GATE and other high achieving 4th and 5th grade students.

In the fall, each family receives a copy of our Parent Handbook that provides specific information about programs as well as district discipline policy that describes our standards for behavior and consequences.

Krey: Adam S. Clark

Brentwood, CA 94513-

(925) 513-6400

R. Paul Krey School is in its second year and is growing rapidly. We are located in the southwest corner of Brentwood, California on Crawford Drive. We are one of five elementary schools in the Brentwood Union School District and opened July 2002 with students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Brentwood is a fast growing community and Krey School reflects that growth. Our student  ody has over 700 students. Members of the R. Paul Krey School community believe students learn best in a afe, comfortable place where they feel supported and inspired, are not afraid to take risks, and are empowered to be a part of their own education. Student attitudes and behaviors will be shaped by the "5 C’s," a  haracter education program that forms the foundation of our school beliefs. The "5 C’s" are: caring, cooperation, courage, creativity, and citizenship. The staff believes in a preventative rather than punitive discipline plan built on the underpinnings of well-taught, rehearsed routines and procedures, child-centered instruction that is both multi-modal, and developmentally appropriate. Both  arents and teachers believe the most valuable courses in the curriculum are those that impart students with the necessary academic knowledge yet at the same time offer students an opportunity for self-awareness, creativity, tolerance, and esponsibility. Site-based leadership that includes parents, teachers, and administration reflect the decision-making process and goal orientation of R. Paul Krey Elementary School.

Our Character Education program is proactive in shaping positive student attitudes and behaviors. We believe in early intervention measures such as our Conflict Resolution Program and Social Skills Counseling program. Our long-term commitment to students includes on-going programs such as student citizenship rojects, disability awareness training, student assistants and lunchtime activities. There is strong leadership at the school site where the staff has agreed to maintain consistent rules, policies and procedures in order to streamline the need for discipline. The staff receives ongoing training on how to handle disruptive students and mediate conflicts. They regularly apply preventative strategies to school activities.

Krey Elementary School enlists parent volunteers to help us create a positive school environment that connects both school and home. We work collaboratively with local community agencies such as the police, fire department in order to address school-violence prevention policies and build community citizenship. The programs and materials we use are compatible with students’ cultural and developmental needs. The school incorporates role models whenever possible and encourages all students to take on leadership roles in our school community.

Enrichment classes are offered once a week for students who qualify for GATE or are highly motivated to learn. An after school-tutoring program is held twice a week for students who need tutoring to meet grade level standards. Teachers offer a homework club two to three times a week per grade levels 3 through 5 as an opportunity for students to do their homework in a quiet setting with teachers’  ssistance if needed. Classroom assemblies during Red Ribbon Week in October are used to educate students about drug awareness and safety.

Parent’s Club meet once a month on the school campus. Parents, local senior citizens, and high school students work with students in the classroom. We have the County Program for the disabled at our school site. Students from the general education population work with our students in the county program. We have "coyote cash" a positive incentive program where students earn money that can be spent at a school store once every two months.
